Diabetes Education

Being newly diagnosed by your doctor with Type 1, 2 or gestational diabetes will mean that some aspects of your life will need to change, but this does not need to be a difficult transition.  Management of diabetes can be fairly straight forward and easy if you start out with the right information and support.

If you have been diagnosed with diabetes by your doctor OR have diabetes and your blood sugars are not in good control, it is recommended to see a Certified Diabetes Educator and a Registered Dietitian.

Not being informed about your diabetes is unfortunately not a good option for diabetes control.  Even though you may not have many unpleasant symptoms at the present time, there is irreversible damage occurring within your body when you allow your blood sugars run consistently high.  Please "click" on Learn More About Diabetes and Are you at Risk? for further information.

A consultation for Diabetes will include:

A calculated, easy to follow, Diabetic mealplan to achieve recommended blood sugar levels
Working closely with your doctor to achieve the best diabetic medication and/or insulin doses to compliment your new lifestyle and way of eating for optimal blood sugar control.
Blood sugar testing guidelines and recommended levels
Recommendations and guidelines for exercise
How to incorporate alcohol
Effects of stress
Recommendations for when you are ill
Teaching of safe and sanitary blood sugar testing techniques
Carbohydrate counting
How your diabetic pills and/or insulin functions and how this relates to what you eat
How to prevent and treat various issues such as low (hypoglycemia) and high  (hyperglycemia) blood sugars
